About

Licking Creek Hiker-Biker Campsite is one of 31 primitive camping areas maintained by the National Park Service along the historic C&O Canal Towpath. Located at mile 116.0 near Pool, Maryland, this free campsite serves hikers and cyclists traveling the 184.5-mile trail. The site operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no reservations required or accepted, and overnight stays are limited to one night to accommodate through-travelers. Each hiker-biker campsite along the canal includes basic amenities: a chemical toilet available year-round, a picnic table, and a grill or fire ring. Water is available on-site but is non-potable and must be filtered, chemically treated, or boiled before consumption. These primitive sites are spaced approximately every 5 to 7 miles along the towpath, making them ideal for multi-day bicycle touring or hiking trips. The C&O Canal Towpath offers a flat, scenic route through the Potomac River valley with opportunities to see historic canal structures, diverse wildlife, and natural beauty. Licking Creek campsite provides a simple, no-cost overnight option for self-supported travelers exploring this National Historical Park.
