About
Main Dam Campground sits along the shores of Lake Isabella in the Kern River Valley, part of Sequoia National Forest. When operational, it offers 82 campsites at an elevation of 2,460 feet, providing access to fishing, boating, and other water recreation on one of southern California's largest reservoirs. The campground has been closed indefinitely due to the Isabella Dam Safety Modification Project, a major dam remediation effort by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to address structural safety concerns with Isabella Dam. This project has required the closure of several USFS recreation facilities in the immediate dam area. Campers seeking lakeside camping in the area should consider the nearby Auxiliary Dam Campground, which remains open year-round and offers similar lake access with developed amenities.
Directions
From Bakersfield, take CA-178 east approximately 40 miles to Lake Isabella. The campground is located near the main dam on the southern end of the lake off CA-155.
