About
West Fork Cabin is a rustic Forest Service guard station situated on the Rocky Mountain Front Range, a stone's throw from the North Fork Teton River near Mount Werner and Mount Wright. The single-room cabin features a combined kitchen/dining and sleeping area accommodating six guests with two sets of bunk beds and two folding cots. Propane heat and a wood cook stove with limited firewood keep the cabin warm, while a hand pump outside provides potable water year-round. No electricity or refrigeration is available, so guests must bring coolers, lanterns, sleeping bags, and food. A vault toilet is located outside the cabin. Mandatory bear-resistant food storage is required from March 1 through December 15 due to bear activity in the area. Recreation opportunities abound, including hiking, horseback riding, fishing along the North Fork Teton River, cross-country skiing, and snowmobiling. Teton Pass Ski Resort is just 3.5 miles away. During winter, the road is plowed only to the ski area; guests must travel the remaining distance by ski, snowshoe, or snowmobile.
Directions
From Highway 89 about 5 miles north of Choteau, go west on Teton Canyon Road, which becomes Forest Development Road 144 at the National Forest boundary. Continue past Teton Pass Ski Resort about 3.5 miles to the road end. The cabin is behind a locked gate on the left just after crossing the bridge. In winter, the road is not plowed beyond the ski area; park in the ski area lot and travel by ski, snowshoe, or snowmobile.
