About
Spinreel Sand Camping is a primitive dispersed camping area located directly on the sand dunes in the heart of the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area, managed by the Siuslaw National Forest. The 17 numbered campsites are accessible only by 4x4 vehicles via soft sand routes from the Spinreel OHV Staging Area. This is a destination for off-road vehicle enthusiasts who want to camp in the midst of the dunes with immediate access to open riding zones and designated sand routes like the Coast Guard Trail. The camping area is fully primitive with no developed amenities. There are no restrooms, potable water, fire rings, or picnic tables at the sites. Campers must bring their own fire pans for campfires, portable toilets, and pack out all trash (dumpsters are available at the sand entrance). Each site can accommodate up to five vehicles and 20 people. The surrounding landscape features miles of open sand dunes, coastal forest, and proximity to the Pacific Ocean. Nearby attractions include beach access for beachcombing and wildlife viewing, as well as the John Dellenback Dunes Trail two miles north, which offers non-motorized hiking through tall dunes to the beach.
Directions
From Reedsport, Oregon, travel about 12 miles south on Highway 101 to Spinreel Road. Turn right onto Spinreel Road and proceed half a mile to the Spinreel Campground entrance. Follow the main access road for a short distance; the sand access will be on the left near the off-road vehicle staging area. 4x4 vehicle required for sand access to campsites.
