McCown Valley sits on the east shore of Whitney Lake in Central Texas, operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The campground offers 105 sites divided among 48 standard electric family sites, 39 equestrian sites, 13 primitive tent-only sites, and 5 screened sleeping shelters. Most sites feature water and electric hookups with either 30 or 50 amp service, and pull-through sites are available for larger rigs up to 40 feet. The equestrian park is a major draw, with five miles of dedicated trails winding through cedar, live oak, and post oak woodlands and open pastures near the lakeshore. Deer and wild turkeys are common in the area. Beyond horseback riding, visitors enjoy swimming at one of the lake's two beaches, fishing for bass, crappie, and catfish, boating from the three-lane ramp, and kayaking on the Brazos River. Facilities include two restroom buildings with flush toilets and showers, drinking water throughout the campground, and an RV dump station. A large day-use group shelter is available for reservation. The 0-54 loop has a security gate that requires your reservation code for entry.

Directions

From I-35 in Hillsboro, take HWY 22 west 12 miles to Whitney, exit 933 north for 2.5 miles to FM 1713. Proceed 6 miles west, following signs into campground.
