Air Quality Alert issued August 5 at 2:20PM PDT by NWS Medford OR

2:20 PM — August 6th, 10:00 PM

Oregon Department of Environmental Quality has issued an Air Pollution Advisory for the Medford/Ashland metro area...in effect until 10 PM PDT Thursday. Ozone pollution may reach levels unhealthy to for sensitive groups, including children, pregnant people, older adults, and people with heart or respiratory conditions. Health officials recommend sensitive groups limit outdoor activity when pollution levels are high. DEQ urges residents to protect their health and limit activities that cause pollution during this time. Recommendations include: * Limit driving by using public transportation, carpooling, or other alternative transportation. * Avoid unnecessary engine idling. * Refuel vehicles during cooler evening hours. * Postpone yard work that uses gasoline-powered equipment. * Postpone painting and aerosol spray products. Smog irritates the eyes nose and lungs and contributes to breathing problems. Consult your healthcare provider if these symptoms worsen. Ozone forms when hot temperatures and low winds combine with pollution from cars, gas powered engines, paints, and aerosols. These air pollutants react with sunlight and heat to produce ozone and haze. Ozone pollution increases throughout the day with exposure to sunlight, so pollution levels tend to be highest during the afternoons and evenings. Air quality monitors may show good air quality in the morning, then quickly jump to unhealthy levels later in the day. About

Union Creek Campground occupies a scenic stretch of old-growth forest in the Union Creek Historic District, where its namesake creek intersects the Rogue River. Constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1934, the campground retains a classic national forest character with well-spaced sites tucked among large trees. The Upper Rogue River here is fed by snowmelt and springs from the Cascade Range, including Mount Mazama's slopes. The campground offers 73 individual sites, most standard nonelectric, plus 3 full-hookup RV sites located near the day-use parking area along an ATV trail. Each site has a picnic table and fire ring. Thirteen vault toilets and drinking water spigots are distributed throughout. A campground host sells firewood and gray water sumps are available. Union Creek Resort is within walking distance, providing a convenience store, restaurant, and ice cream shop. The entire length of the Upper Rogue River is paralleled by the hiker-only Upper Rogue River Trail, easily accessed for short segments. The Rogue Gorge Trail System connects Rogue Gorge Day Use through the campground to Natural Bridge Day Use Area. Nearby attractions include Rogue Gorge, Natural Bridge (where the river runs underground through a lava tube), Diamond Lake Resort, and Crater Lake National Park.

Directions

From Medford, take OR-62 (Crater Lake Highway) approximately 56 miles toward Crater Lake National Park. The campground is on the left (west) through the Union Creek Wayside parking area.
