Special Weather Statement issued May 3 at 3:18AM EDT by NWS Albany NY

3:18 AM — 7:00 PM

The combination of drying fine fuels, northwest wind gusts between 20 and 30 mph, and relative humidity values between 25 and 35 percent will contribute to an elevated risk of fire spread late this morning into this afternoon for the Mid-Hudson Valley, eastern Catskills, Taconics, Greater Capital District, and Lake George-Saratoga regions in eastern New York. As a reminder, the annual statewide burn ban remains in effect until May 14. No burn permits are issued. Use extra caution if handling any potential ignition sources such as machinery or matches and ensure to properly extinguish or dispose of cigarette butts. About

Nestled at the foot of Slide Mountain, the tallest peak in the Catskills, Woodland Valley Campground offers 70 tent and trailer sites surrounded by Panther, Cornell, and Wittenberg Mountains. The campground was established in the early 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps, making it one of the oldest public campgrounds in New York State. The area was previously clear-cut in the late 1800s for hemlock bark used in the tanning industry before becoming state land in 1902. The campground serves as the trailhead for both the Slide-Wittenberg Trail providing access to the Burroughs Range and the Woodland Valley-Denning Trail which connects to the Giant Ledge-Panther Mountain Trail. Woodland Valley Stream runs through the campground, containing brook trout, brown trout, rainbow trout, and other species. Most campsites are wooded, with some located along the stream. The nearby village of Phoenicia offers tubing on the Esopus Creek, a railroad museum, Rail Explorer pedal rides on the Catskill Mountain Railroad, shops, restaurants, and other attractions. The campground includes flush toilets, hot showers, a dump station, picnic area with tables and grills, and recycling center. Some sites can accommodate RVs up to 30 feet in length.

Directions

From Thruway Exit 19, Kingston, bear right after leaving the exit onto Route 28 West. Proceed 20-25 miles to Phoenicia. Follow Woodland Valley Road back over the Esopus Creek, turn right at the T after the bridge, stay left at the first sharp bend, and follow Woodland Valley Road approximately six miles to the campground.
