About
Mongaup Pond Campground is a New York State DEC facility located in northeastern Sullivan County within Catskill Park. The campground sits on a 120-acre lake, the largest body of water in the Catskill Park outside of New York City reservoirs, at an elevation of 2,139 feet. Originally opened in 1966 with 65 sites, the campground has grown to 163 tent and trailer sites, many positioned along the lakeshore in a dense forest environment that provides privacy and a remote camping experience. The campground offers extensive recreational opportunities including a sandy swimming beach, boat rentals (canoes, rowboats, and kayaks), and fishing for brook trout, smallmouth bass, chain pickerel, and other species. Only hand-launched boats with electric trolling motors are permitted to protect the water quality for the Catskill Fish Hatchery located 1.9 miles downstream. Hikers can explore the 1.5-mile Mongaup Pond Loop trail around the lake or access over 45 miles of trails connecting to the Big Indian Wilderness and Willowemoc Wild Forest trail systems via multiple trailheads within the campground. Facilities include flush toilets, hot showers, a trailer dump station, picnic pavilion rental, firewood sales, and recycling center. Six campsites are wheelchair accessible, along with accessible shower buildings, fishing platforms, and picnic areas. The campground serves as a base for exploring the greater Catskills region, with the Catskill Fish Hatchery just 3 miles away and numerous attractions including historic sites, covered bridges, and outdoor recreation within easy driving distance.
