Special Weather Statement issued May 3 at 3:18AM EDT by NWS Albany NY

3:18 AM — 7:00 PM

The combination of drying fine fuels, northwest wind gusts between 20 and 30 mph, and relative humidity values between 25 and 35 percent will contribute to an elevated risk of fire spread late this morning into this afternoon for the Mid-Hudson Valley, eastern Catskills, Taconics, Greater Capital District, and Lake George-Saratoga regions in eastern New York. As a reminder, the annual statewide burn ban remains in effect until May 14. No burn permits are issued. Use extra caution if handling any potential ignition sources such as machinery or matches and ensure to properly extinguish or dispose of cigarette butts. Please refer to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation website for more information on burn restrictions.

About

Peekamoose Blue Hole is a unique natural feature within Sundown Wild Forest in the Catskill Forest Preserve. The Blue Hole is a depression in the streambed rock of Rondout Creek, formed by sand and swirling gravel in an ancient whirlpool. The creek is part of the New York City drinking water watershed and offers excellent trout fishing for brown and brook trout. The site features a designated camping area known as the Lower Field with 12 primitive back-in campsites accommodating up to 6 people each. The Blue Hole swimming area is located 0.6 miles from the parking area via a trail. Due to increased visitation in recent years, DEC has implemented special regulations including a permit system during peak season. The location serves as a trailhead for the Peekamoose Table Trail and Bangle Hill Trail, providing access to Catskill high peaks hiking. Port-a-johns and a dumpster are provided during summer months between Memorial Day and Labor Day. All visitors must practice Leave No Trace principles to protect this sensitive riparian corridor.

Directions

The parking lot is located at 41°54'59.1"N 74°26'07.3"W off Peekamoose Road in the Town of Denning. A 60-car parking lot provides access to both the Blue Hole and Peekamoose Table trail. Visitors must show a valid permit to enter. A secondary lot at the Lower Field provides camping parking. Parking along the roadway is prohibited and is a tow-away zone. Trailers and vehicles over 20 feet cannot be accommodated.
