About
Winter Harbor 3 Sided Shelter is a remote backcountry facility located in Winter Harbor on the west coast of Prince of Wales Island within Tongass National Forest. The shelter is situated near the south entrance to Tuxekan Passage, approximately 66 miles northwest of Ketchikan and 15 miles north-northwest of Klawock. This three-sided Adirondack-style shelter provides basic protection from Southeast Alaska's wet weather while allowing visitors to experience the remote coastal environment. Like other USFS shelters in the Tongass, it offers a simple structure where campers can pitch a tent or set up sleeping gear while having some protection from rain and wind. The shelter serves boaters, kayakers, and floatplane visitors exploring the remote west coast of Prince of Wales Island. Access to Winter Harbor is limited to boat, kayak, or floatplane due to its remote location. The area is characterized by temperate rainforest, rugged coastline, and the pristine wilderness typical of the Tongass National Forest. Visitors should be prepared for backcountry conditions and bring all necessary supplies, as no amenities are provided beyond the basic shelter structure.
