About

Winter Harbor 3 Sided Shelter is a primitive backcountry facility in the Tongass National Forest on Prince of Wales Island in Southeast Alaska. The shelter is typical of the Adirondack-style 3-sided structures found throughout the Tongass, providing basic overhead protection from the region's frequent rain while remaining open on one side. These shelters in the Tongass National Forest generally offer minimal amenities and are intended for backcountry travelers seeking basic shelter rather than developed camping facilities. The surrounding area features the characteristic temperate rainforest landscape of Southeast Alaska, with dense stands of Sitka spruce, western hemlock, and western red cedar. As with other free-use shelters in the Tongass, visitors should come prepared for primitive conditions including bringing their own water, packing out all trash, and being self-sufficient in this remote wilderness setting.
