About
Honker Lake Cabin offers a remote wilderness experience on Prince of Wales Island in southeastern Alaska. This 12x12 foot Pan Abode cedar log cabin sits on the gently rolling shoreline of Honker Lake, surrounded by old-growth spruce, hemlock, and cedar forest with a dense understory of huckleberry and salmonberry bushes. The cabin serves as a key shelter point along the Honker Divide Canoe Route, a challenging 30-mile paddling route through the heart of the island. The cabin sleeps up to six on wooden bunkbeds and is equipped with a wood stove for heat, table, benches, cooking counter, shelves, and basic tools. An aluminum skiff with oars is available at the cabin. Guests must bring all supplies including sleeping bags, cooking equipment, water treatment, and food. The area provides excellent fishing for rainbow and cutthroat trout, Dolly Varden, and coho and sockeye salmon. Wildlife viewing opportunities abound, with the lake named for the migrating Canada geese that frequent the area. Visitors may also see bald eagles, Sitka black-tailed deer, black bears, and wolves. Access is either by floatplane (54 air miles from Ketchikan) or canoe from Hatchery Creek Bridge, which requires 7-8 hours of paddling upstream with several portages on muddy natural tread trails. Winter access by floatplane may be impossible when the lake is frozen.
Directions
Accessible by floatplane or canoe. Floatplane: 54 air miles from Ketchikan, 27 miles from Craig. Canoe: Launch at Hatchery Creek Bridge and paddle 6 miles to cabin (7-8 hours). The canoe route involves upstream paddling and several portages on natural tread trails. Refer to USGS map Craig D-3. Float plane access may be impossible when lake is frozen in winter.
