About
Honker Lake Cabin is a Pan Abode-style cedar log cabin situated on the gently rolling shoreline of Honker Lake on Prince of Wales Island. The 12x12 foot structure is surrounded by old-growth temperate rainforest of spruce, hemlock, and cedar, with dense understory of huckleberry and salmonberry. The cabin is named for the migrating Canada geese that frequent the area, and visitors may also spot bald eagles, wolves, Sitka black-tailed deer, and black bears. The cabin sleeps up to six on wooden bunkbeds (no mattresses) and is equipped with a wood stove for heating, cooking counter, table, benches, and an outdoor pit toilet. An aluminum skiff with oars is provided for exploring the lake. Firewood may be available but supply is not guaranteed. There is no potable water; lake water must be filtered, boiled, or chemically treated. Access is via float plane or the Honker Divide Canoe Route, Prince of Wales Island's longest trail at 30 miles through the Hatchery Creek/Thorne River system. The canoe launch at Hatchery Creek Bridge is 6 miles from the cabin and takes 7-8 hours of paddling with several portages and challenging upstream sections. Anglers can fish for rainbow and cutthroat trout, Dolly Varden, and coho and sockeye salmon.
Directions
Accessible by float plane (54 air miles from Ketchikan, 27 miles from Craig) or canoe along the Honker Divide Canoe Route. To access by canoe, launch at the Hatchery Creek bridge and paddle 6 miles to the cabin, which takes 7-8 hours. The canoe route includes several portages and difficult upstream paddling; recommended at moderate to high water levels.
