About
Eagles Nest Campground is located on Prince of Wales Island, the third largest island in the United States, within the vast Tongass National Forest. The campground provides 12 camping sites including ten drive-in sites and two walk-in locations along the lakeside, all situated in a temperate rainforest surrounded by muskeg and the scenic Balls Lake, eighteen miles west of Thorne Bay. The campground offers excellent recreation opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts. The 2.5-mile Balls Lake Trail encircles the lake, passing through the campground and providing opportunities to view swans, kingfisher, ducks, and diverse riparian plants. An accessible 0.5-mile Eagle's Nest Interpretive Trail winds through massive spruce trees beside Control Creek, where salmon come to spawn. A canoe launch on the lakeshore provides access for paddlers, and fishing is available from boat or shore for trout and Dolly Varden. Sockeye salmon, wildflowers, and industrious beavers are commonly seen in and around the lake, with scenic views of the Thorne Mountains and surrounding foothills.
