About

Eagles Nest Campground is nestled in the temperate rainforest above Balls Lake on Prince of Wales Island, the third largest island in the United States. The campground provides 12 sites including ten drive-in sites and two walk-in locations along the lakeside, all featuring picnic tables and campfire rings. A centrally located two-stall vault toilet serves the campground. Note that potable water is not available; campers must bring their own supply. The setting offers excellent recreation opportunities. A boat launch on Balls Lake provides access for canoes and kayaks, and anglers can fish from boat or shore for trout and Dolly Varden. The 2.5-mile Balls Lake Trail passes through the campground and loops around the entire lake, where swans, kingfisher, ducks, and an array of riparian plants can be observed. Sockeye salmon, wildflowers, and industrious beavers are common sights in and around the lake. The accessible Eagles Nest Interpretive Trail extends 0.5 miles one-way through towering spruce trees beside Control Creek, where salmon come to spawn. The trail offers scenic views of the Thorne Mountains and surrounding foothills. The campground sees light usage and provides a peaceful base for exploring the central portion of Prince of Wales Island.
