About
Staney Creek Cabin offers a remote wilderness lodging experience on Prince of Wales Island in Alaska's Tongass National Forest. The 12x12-foot primitive log cabin sits at the mouth of Staney Creek in a grassy tidal meadow surrounded by towering old-growth spruce, hemlock, and cedar. The cabin sleeps up to 6 guests on wooden bunkbeds and is equipped with a table, benches, wood stove, cooking counter, and outdoor pit toilet. There is no running water or electricity. The cabin is accessible by driving from Hollis via Highway 924 to Klawock, then Highway 929 north to Control Lake Junction, turning left on Forest Road 20 for about 8 miles, then left on Forest Road 2054 to the trailhead. From there, a half-mile boardwalk trail leads to the cabin. Total drive time from Hollis is approximately two hours. Alternatively, access is available by boat or floatplane at high tide, with the cabin located 68 air miles from Ketchikan. The area is renowned for fishing, with Staney Creek supporting cutthroat trout, rainbow trout, dolly varden, steelhead, and four species of salmon. Wildlife is abundant, including waterfowl, shorebirds, bald eagles, Sitka black-tailed deer, and black bears. Visitors must bring all supplies including drinking water, sleeping bags, cooking stove and fuel, firewood or bio bricks for the wood stove, toilet paper, garbage bags, and a first aid kit. Extra supplies for 2-5 days are recommended due to potential weather delays.
