About
Control Lake Cabin sits in a grassy clearing on the shore of Control Lake in the central portion of Prince of Wales Island. The surrounding landscape features sparse lodgepole pines with muskeg openings extending several miles west. The area has been impacted by past timber harvest, and the cabin is currently accessible only by the provided rowboat as shoreline access is not available. The cabin sleeps up to six guests and is furnished with wooden bunkbeds (no mattresses), rustic log furniture, cooking counters, and a wood stove for heating. An aluminum skiff with oars is provided for lake access and fishing; guests may bring a long-shaft outboard motor. A vault toilet is located outside. Propane heat is no longer available. Guests must bring all supplies including drinking water (or filter/treat lake water), sleeping bags and pads, cooking equipment and fuel, food, toilet paper, garbage bags, and personal flotation devices. Firewood supply is not guaranteed. The remote location and unpredictable weather mean visitors should pack extra supplies for potential 2-5 day trip extensions, particularly in winter when road conditions and frozen lake surfaces can limit access.
Directions
From State Highway 929, the cabin is 41 road miles from Hollis, 20 road miles from Craig, and 15 miles from Thorne Bay. From the highway pullout, paddle approximately 20 minutes across the lake to reach the cabin. An aluminum skiff with oars is provided at the put-in; pull the skiff up on the dock and pull the plug after use. Float plane access is possible when the lake is not frozen.
