Special Weather Statement issued February 8 at 1:57PM AKST by NWS Juneau AK
After a series of shortwaves that brought rain and gusty winds over the past few days, a stronger front will approach southeast Alaska from the west on Tuesday. South to southeast winds will increase through the day Tuesday. Confidence is increasing for windy conditions with strong gusts Tuesday night into Wednesday morning as the front pushes west to east across southeast Alaska. Gales with storm force gusts will be possible ahead and along the frontal passage, especially along north-south oriented channels and along the coastal waters. A period of moderate to heavy rainfall will be possible with the frontal passage, but with the progressive nature of the front, flooding is not expected at this time. Another gale to potentially storm force low will quickly lift northeast into the Gulf and looks to push across southeast Alaska sometime later Wednesday into Thursday, bringing another round of strong gusty winds and moderate to heavy rainfall. Further details on the high wind and flooding potential for this system will be honed in on in the coming days. Looking further ahead, a cooling trend is favored to commence in the wake of these passing systems by late work week into the weekend. Snow levels will begin to lower and a colder outflow wind pattern could set up by late weekend. This could result in a return of snow for some coastal communities, especially across northern southeast Alaska. Further details on the pattern change and snow potential will be honed as the weekend approaches.

About
Sweet Water Lake Cabin offers a remote wilderness lodging experience on Prince of Wales Island in the Tongass National Forest. The 12x14 foot primitive, pre-cut cedar log cabin sits on a large gravelly beach on the eastern shore of Sweetwater Lake, surrounded by old-growth temperate rainforest of spruce, hemlock, and cedar. The cabin sleeps up to six guests on wooden bunkbeds and is equipped with a table, benches, wood stove for heat, cooking counter, shelving, cupboards, and basic tools. An aluminum skiff with oars is provided for guest use. Anglers will find excellent fishing opportunities for rainbow trout, cutthroat trout, Dolly Varden, as well as coho, sockeye, and pink salmon. The area is prime territory for hunting Sitka black-tailed deer and black bear, with seasons running from late summer through late fall. Wildlife is abundant, including waterfowl, mink, otter, beaver, bald eagles, and seals that are often spotted in the lake. Boating on Sweetwater Lake offers scenic exploration, though navigation to nearby Barnes Lake via Gold and Galligan Lagoon is dangerous and not recommended. The cabin is accessible year-round by vehicle and boat (10 road miles from Coffman Cove via Forest Road 3030, followed by a 200-foot trail and half-mile boat paddle), or by float plane (68 air miles from Ketchikan). However, winter float plane access may be limited when the lake surface freezes. Visitors must bring their own sleeping bags, sleeping pads, cook stove, food, water, and all camping gear. No running water or electricity is available.
Directions
From Ketchikan, take Forest Service Road 20 to Forest Road 3030, approximately 2 hours from Hollis. The cabin is located 10 road miles from Coffman Cove. After driving, hike a 200-foot trail to a Forest Service-provided boat, then paddle approximately half a mile to the cabin. Also accessible by float plane, 68 air miles from Ketchikan.
