About

Located approximately 25 miles southwest of Elk City, Idaho, Wildhorse Campground offers six primitive campsites in a scenic riparian meadow setting on Wildhorse Lake. The campground serves as one of the principal access points to the Gospel Hump Wilderness, a 206,000-acre federally protected wilderness area designated in 1978. Each campsite is equipped with a table and fire grate. Access to the campground is via primitive mountain roads, including Crooked River Road #233 and Road #233I. The rough terrain makes trailers not recommended. From the campground, multiple trails lead deep into the wilderness, including a trail to Tenmile Meadows and another south of the campground that extends all the way to Sugarloaf Butte. This remote location offers excellent opportunities for hiking, fishing, swimming, and backcountry exploration. Winter activities such as cross-country skiing are possible when conditions allow access. The pristine wilderness setting provides solitude and stunning alpine scenery for those willing to make the journey on challenging forest roads.
