About
Jerry Walker Cabin is a historic Forest Service rental cabin situated in the remote backcountry of the Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests in Idaho County. Originally purchased by Jerry and Helen Walker in 1967, the cabin was donated to the U.S. Forest Service in the 1980s and is now available for public recreational use. The cabin sits at approximately 4,500 feet elevation along Crooked River Road, less than a mile from Orogrande, a historic mining site that is now a ghost town.
The rustic cabin features two bedrooms, each containing two single beds, accommodating up to 4 guests. The living room has a wood-burning fireplace insert for heat, while the kitchen is equipped with a wood cook stove. Outside, a metal fire ring surrounded by primitive benches provides space for campfires. A vault toilet is located in a separate building. Guests must bring their own bedding, cookware, drinking water, and firewood. There is no electricity, running water, or cell phone service at this location.
Recreational opportunities abound in the surrounding area. A hiking trail is located directly behind the cabin, and several lakes lie within a 3-mile radius accessible by foot or ATV. Fishing is available in Crooked River and its tributaries. The area also offers hunting, snowmobiling, and cross-country skiing. The nearest services are in Elk City, Idaho, which has a grocery store, restaurant, gas stations, and laundromat.
Directions
From State Highway 14, turn south on Crooked River Road #233. Proceed approximately 8 miles to the cabin on the right. The nearest town is Elk City, Idaho.
