Special Weather Statement issued May 23 at 12:09PM EDT by NWS Gray ME

12:09 PM — 10:00 PM

* The warm air temperatures this weekend in the mid 60s may cause people to underestimate the dangers of the cold water temperatures which are currently only in the mid 50s across Sebago Lake and Lake Winnipesaukee, and in the mid 50s in the regions smaller lakes and rivers. * The cold water temperatures can quickly cause hypothermia to anyone immersed in the water. When the water temperature is below 60 degrees, the average submerged person could loose dexterity within minutes and be unable to accomplish simple tasks. Anyone on small boats, canoes, or kayaks should plan accordingly if recreating this weekend and use extreme caution to avoid this threat. Paddle smart from the start and always wear your life jacket! * Generally light and variable winds shift to southerly today. Winds will be breezy this afternoon with some gusts up to 25 mph. If boating on large bodies of water, these strong winds can increase the likelihood of overturning your boat, canoe, or kayak due to increased wave heights.

About

White Ledge Campground sits within White Mountain National Forest on the west side of NH Route 16, approximately six miles south of Conway. The facility contains 28 campsites organized into two loops, with a mix of tent-only and standard nonelectric sites. The campground is well-shaded by white pine and hardwood forest and includes a grassy play area. Vault toilets and a hand pump for potable water are provided; there are no showers, hookups, or dump station. Two hiking trails originate from the campground. The White Ledge Trail is a moderate 4-mile loop offering views of the surrounding peaks. The Carter Ledge Trail is a strenuous 4.5-mile hike leading to the summit of Mt. Chocorua. Local rivers and streams provide fishing opportunities for stocked and wild trout. The nearby town of Conway offers restaurants, shopping, and other amenities. The campground provides convenient access to the broader White Mountains region, including the Kancamagus Highway scenic byway and the Presidential Range. Mount Washington, the highest peak in the Northeast at 6,288 feet, is within an hour's drive.
