Special Weather Statement issued May 23 at 2:28AM EDT by NWS Gray ME
* Air temperatures in the lower 60s to lower 70s this weekend (50s on Sunday) may cause people to underestimate the dangers of the cold water temperatures which are currently only in the mid 50s across Sebago Lake and Lake Winnipesaukee, and in the mid 50s in the regions smaller lakes and rivers. * The cold water temperatures can quickly cause hypothermia to anyone immersed in the water. When the water temperature is below 60 degrees, the average submerged person could loose dexterity within minutes and be unable to accomplish simple tasks. Anyone on small boats, canoes, or kayaks should plan accordingly if recreating this weekend and use extreme caution to avoid this threat. Paddle smart from the start and always wear your life jacket! * Generally light and variable winds shift to southerly today. Winds will be breezy this afternoon with some gusts up to 25 mph. If boating on large bodies of water, these strong winds can increase the likelihood of overturning your boat, canoe, or kayak due to increased wave heights.
About
Russell-Colbath Historic Site is a day-use area preserving an important piece of White Mountain history along the Kancamagus Highway. The centerpiece is the 1832 Russell-Colbath House, the sole surviving original structure from Passaconaway, a 19th-century logging settlement. The site also includes a timber-frame barn constructed in 2003, the Town of Albany Cemetery, and interpretive signage explaining the area's logging and railroad heritage. The half-mile Rail N' River Trail is ADA-accessible and leads through forest to the Swift River, with educational panels along the way. The site is staffed Friday through Wednesday from 10 AM to 3 PM during the open season, though staffing shortages may occasionally cause closures. This is strictly a day-use historic site with no overnight camping facilities. Nearby campgrounds such as Jigger Johnson and Passaconaway offer overnight accommodations for visitors wanting to explore this section of the national forest.
