About

Radeke Cabin served as a summer camp for School of Forestry students at the University of New Hampshire until the mid-1960s before being purchased by the Forest Service in 1969. Today it offers a rustic year-round getaway for families or small groups of up to 10 people along the Kancamagus Scenic Byway. The cabin features 10 wooden bunks divided into 3 rooms, basic furniture including a table, chairs, and couch, plus a wood stove for heating. Firewood for the stove is provided from October 1 through June 1. An accessible pit toilet and campfire ring are located outside, and a wheelchair ramp provides accessibility to the cabin. Guests must bring all water, bedding, cooking equipment, utensils, and supplies, as well as their own firewood for the outdoor campfire ring. There is no electricity, running water, or cleaning service between visits. Situated in a forest of pine and mixed hardwoods alongside the Swift River in the Saco District, the cabin is a quarter mile from the UNH Trail trailhead at Downes Brook parking area. The 4.8-mile loop trail climbs to the 2,520-foot summit of Mt. Hedgehog with views of surrounding mountains and the Swift River Valley. The area is known for fall foliage, cross-country skiing, brook trout fishing in the Swift River, and wildlife viewing opportunities including moose, black bears, and over 237 bird species.
