Radeke Cabin

Radeke Cabin sits in a forest of pine and mixed hardwoods alongside the Swift River in the White Mountain National Forest. Originally a summer camp for University of New Hampshire School of Forestry students, it was purchased by the Forest Service in 1969 and converted to a public rental cabin. The cabin offers ten wooden bunks divided into three rooms, along with a wood stove, table, chairs, and couch. The cabin is easily accessible by car, located just 14 miles west of Conway on the Kancamagus Highway, a quarter mile before Passaconaway Campground. While the setting is convenient, facilities are primitive: there is no potable water, electricity, or running water. An accessible pit toilet is located a short distance from the cabin. Guests must bring their own water, bedding, cooking equipment, and pack out all trash. The area offers excellent recreation opportunities. The UNH Trail to Mt. Hedgehog begins at the nearby Downes Brook parking area, and numerous other hiking trails line the Kancamagus corridor. The Swift River provides brook trout fishing, and winter visitors can access cross-country ski trails throughout the area. The Kancamagus Scenic Byway is particularly spectacular during fall foliage season.

Directions

From NH Route 16 in Conway, take NH Route 112 (Kancamagus Highway) west for 14 miles. The cabin is on the right, a quarter mile before Passaconaway Campground. From Interstate 93 in Lincoln, take exit 32 for NH Route 112, turn left (east) at the bottom of the exit ramp onto NH Route 112. The cabin is approximately 20 miles on the left, a quarter mile after Passaconaway Campground.
