Special Weather Statement issued May 23 at 12:09PM EDT by NWS Gray ME

12:09 PM — 10:00 PM

* The warm air temperatures this weekend in the mid 60s may cause people to underestimate the dangers of the cold water temperatures which are currently only in the mid 50s across Sebago Lake and Lake Winnipesaukee, and in the mid 50s in the regions smaller lakes and rivers. * The cold water temperatures can quickly cause hypothermia to anyone immersed in the water. When the water temperature is below 60 degrees, the average submerged person could loose dexterity within minutes and be unable to accomplish simple tasks. Anyone on small boats, canoes, or kayaks should plan accordingly if recreating this weekend and use extreme caution to avoid this threat. Paddle smart from the start and always wear your life jacket! * Generally light and variable winds shift to southerly today. Winds will be breezy this afternoon with some gusts up to 25 mph. If boating on large bodies of water, these strong winds can increase the likelihood of overturning your boat, canoe, or kayak due to increased wave heights.

About

Jim Liberty Cabin sits on the historic footprint of the Old Peak House, which was built in 1891 and destroyed by a windstorm in 1915. The current cabin was constructed by the Forest Service in 1932 and renovated in 1974. Located at the intersection of the Liberty and Hammond trails on Mount Chocorua's southwest shoulder, it provides a rustic overnight option for hikers tackling one of New Hampshire's most iconic peaks. The cabin is a simple one-room structure with three triple bunks accommodating up to nine people and a small table. There is no potable water available, so visitors must pack in their own supply. A pit toilet is located 300 feet down the Liberty Trail. Fires are strictly prohibited in and around the cabin. Access is via the Liberty Trail from the trailhead at the end of Paugus Mill Road. The unpaved parking lot holds approximately 10 vehicles and is not plowed in winter, making winter access challenging. The trail to the cabin is approximately 2.5 miles with significant elevation gain.

Directions

From Route 16, turn onto Chocorua Lake Road and cross the Narrows Bridge between Chocorua Lake and Little Chocorua Lake. Follow the dirt road for 1.0 mile and take a left fork up a hill onto Fowlers Mill Road. Follow Fowlers Mill Road for 2.4 miles until you see a sign for Liberty and Brook Trails. Turn right onto Paugus Mill Road and follow it for 1 mile to the parking lot at the trailhead.
