Jim Liberty Cabin

About
Jim Liberty Cabin is a historic backcountry shelter located on the southwest shoulder of Mount Chocorua in the White Mountain National Forest. Built in 1932 and renovated in 1974, the cabin sits on the footprint of the Old Peak House, a hotel built in 1891 that was destroyed by a windstorm in 1915. The cabin is positioned 0.5 miles below Chocorua's summit on the Liberty Trail at the intersection with the Hammond Trail. The one-room structure features three triple bunks that can accommodate up to nine people, a small table, and a bench. A pit toilet is located 300 feet down the Liberty Trail. The cabin is free to use and operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no reservations required. To preserve the fragile alpine environment and due to fire danger, fires are not allowed in or around the cabin. Campers should bring stoves for cooking. There is no water source at the cabin, so hikers must carry in all water or be prepared to treat water from nearby sources. The cabin serves as a popular overnight stop for hikers ascending Mount Chocorua, which offers spectacular 360-degree views from its rocky summit. The cabin is chained down to withstand the strong winds common at this elevation.
Directions
