About
Whisky Camp Guard Station was built in the 1940s and served as the summer home for a U.S. Forest Service fireguard whose duties included firefighting, serving as a relief lookout, and maintaining phone lines and trails. This compact, historic two-room cabin is tucked beneath a dense forest canopy of cedar, pine, and fir trees at 3,800 feet elevation in the Tiller Ranger District of southwestern Oregon. The cabin accommodates up to four guests with two single beds and two single roll-out beds, all with foam pad mattresses. Propane-powered amenities include a wall heater, lights, cook stove with oven, and a newly replaced refrigerator. Outside facilities include picnic tables, a campfire ring, an outdoor grill, and a vault toilet. A tent camping area is also available on-site. The Bunchgrass, Elkhorn, and Beaver Creek trails depart directly from Whisky Camp for hiking and horseback riding. The area supports diverse wildlife including elk, deer, black bear, cougar, and smaller mammals. Additional activities include mountain biking, birding, wildlife viewing, and photography. Winter visitors enjoy snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and snowmobiling, though winter access may require traveling one to six miles by these methods depending on snowpack. Four-wheel drive vehicles are recommended year-round. Guests must bring their own water, as none is available on-site. Potable water can be obtained at the Tiller Ranger Station, 45 minutes away.
