About
West Fork Trail Camp offers a true backcountry experience in the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument. Located at 3,100 feet elevation, this primitive hike-in campground features seven trailside campsites accessed via a roughly 5-mile trek from Red Box Station. The camp sits at the intersection of two major trails: the Gabrielino National Recreation Trail and the Silver Moccasin National Recreation Trail, making it a strategic stopping point for long-distance hikers. This is a rugged, minimalist camping experience. The site has no restrooms, no potable water, and is not regularly maintained by the Forest Service. Campers must be fully self-sufficient, bringing all water and packing out all trash. A stream is nearby but water must be treated. Campfires require a valid California Campfire Permit and are only permitted when current fire restrictions allow. Vehicle access to the area is closed; the road leading to the campground is gated. An Adventure Pass or America the Beautiful Pass is required for parking at Red Box Station.
Directions
From Interstate 210 in La Canada, exit at Angeles Crest Highway (Highway 2) and drive north approximately 14 miles to Red Box Station. Park at Red Box (Adventure Pass or America the Beautiful Pass required). From Red Box, proceed on the Gabrielino Trail for 0.7 miles to Forest Road 2N24, head east on 2N24 for 4.4 miles, then make a slight left onto the Gabrielino Trail for 500 feet to reach West Fork Trail Camp.
