Fire Danger Level Elevated to "High"

Effective June 12, 2026, fire danger levels have increased to “HIGH” at the Angeles National Forest, which includes the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument. Visit our Newsroom Webpage to read the full press release.

About

Mt. Lowe Trail Camp sits at 4,500 feet elevation in the rugged San Gabriel Mountains, accessible only by a 4-5 mile hike along the historic Mount Lowe Road from the locked gate at Chaney Trail. The camp offers five primitive backcountry sites in a forested setting that once served the famous Mount Lowe Railway, a scenic railway that operated from 1893 to 1936. This is a true wilderness experience with no developed amenities. There is no potable water on site, so campers must carry sufficient water for drinking, cooking, cleaning, and extinguishing campfires. The camp operates on a strict pack-it-in, pack-it-out basis. A hitching rail accommodates equestrian visitors. The trail camp is first-come, first-served with no fees or reservations required. The hike in follows Mount Lowe Road (2N50.2), which gains significant elevation and offers views of the Los Angeles basin. Nearby points of interest include the ruins of Echo Mountain and Inspiration Point.

Directions

From Interstate 210 in Pasadena, exit Lake Avenue and head north to Loma Alta Drive. Turn west (left) on Loma Alta and drive to Chaney Trail Drive at the flashing yellow light. From the locked gate at 2N50.2, hike 4-5 miles on the road to reach the trail camp.
