About

Spruce Grove Trail Camp is a rustic backcountry campground located in the heart of the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument within Angeles National Forest. The camp features seven primitive walk-in sites, each equipped with a picnic table, and Klamath stoves are available for cooking when fire conditions permit. The setting along the upper reaches of the canyon provides a quiet retreat for hikers seeking solitude away from the more accessible frontcountry campgrounds. Reaching Spruce Grove requires a roughly 4-mile hike from the Chantry Flat trailhead. The route follows portions of the Gabrielino National Recreation Trail and connects to the Upper Winter Creek Trail, making it a solid basecamp for further exploration. There is no potable water on site; seasonal stream water may be present but requires treatment and cannot be relied upon due to variable rainfall. Campers must pack in all supplies and pack out all trash. No fees or reservations are required. Dogs are permitted but must remain leashed at all times. Fire restrictions vary with current conditions, so campers should verify the fire danger level before visiting. A valid California Campfire Permit is required for any stove or campfire use.

Directions

Exit I-210 in Arcadia at Santa Anita Avenue and head north approximately 6 miles to Chantry Flat. Park at the Chantry Flat Picnic Area (Adventure Pass required for parking). Hike approximately 4 miles on the Gabrielino National Recreation Trail to reach the campground.
