About

Coulter Group Campground offers groups an accessible outdoor experience in the Angeles National Forest without traveling far from the Los Angeles metropolitan area. Located at 5,300 feet elevation along the scenic Angeles Crest Highway, the campground sits less than a mile from the San Gabriel Wilderness, which encompasses over 36,000 acres of rugged terrain ranging from 1,600 to 8,200 feet in elevation. The single group site accommodates up to 50 people with a maximum of 12 vehicles. RVs and trailers up to 40 feet can access the site via paved driveways with parking spurs. Facilities include vault toilets, four group picnic tables, stoves, and a group campfire ring with benches. No potable water is available, so groups must bring sufficient water for drinking, cooking, cleaning, and fire extinguishing. The Silver Moccasin Trail is a short walk from the campground, offering access to 58 miles of trail open to hiking, horseback riding, and mountain biking, with connections to the Pacific Crest Trail. The Chilao Visitor Center, located 1.5 miles east, provides exhibits about the region and excellent bird watching opportunities, including 10 species of woodpeckers.

Directions

From La Canada, CA, at the intersection of I-210 and Angeles Crest Highway (State Route 2): Take Route 2 east for 25.6 miles to the Chilao Overnight campground sign. Turn left at the sign and go 0.1 miles to a Y intersection. Bear left at the Y into the Little Pines Loop. Proceed to campsite 18 and turn right on the road blocked by the white gate that goes to Coulter Group Campground. Use the combination obtained when confirming your reservation to open the gate.
