About
Valley Forge Trail Camp sits at 3,500 feet elevation in the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument within Angeles National Forest. This primitive backcountry camp is accessible only via non-motorized travel, making it a destination for backpackers, mountain bikers, and equestrians seeking a wilderness experience close to Los Angeles. The camp features 6 trailside sites available first-come, first-served. The most common approach is from Redbox Picnic Area: follow the Gabrielino Trail for 0.7 miles to forest road 2N24, then head east 2.2 miles to the camp. Alternatively, the Valley Forge Trail descends 3.0 miles from Eaton Saddle on Redbox-Mt. Wilson Road. This is a minimally-maintained primitive site with no potable water. Stream water may be available but must be treated and flow can be low or non-existent during dry periods. A California Campfire Permit is required for any use of campfires, charcoal, portable stoves, or lanterns. Campers should be prepared to pack out all trash and bring adequate water supplies.
Directions
From Interstate 210 in La Canada, exit at Angeles Crest Highway (Hwy. 2) and drive north 14 miles to Redbox Saddle. From Redbox Picnic Area, follow the Gabrielino Trail 0.7 miles to forest road 2N24, then head east 2.2 miles to Valley Forge Trail Camp. The hike is approximately 3.5 miles.
