About
Devore Trail Camp is a secluded backcountry destination for hikers seeking solitude in the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument. Situated at approximately 3,000 feet along the historic Gabrielino National Recreation Trail, the camp provides six well-spaced sites beneath a canopy of oaks and conifers near a small seasonal stream. Each site features a picnic table and fire ring, making it suitable for overnight backpacking trips. Access requires parking at Red Box Saddle (approximately 14 miles up Angeles Crest Highway from Interstate 210 in La Cañada Flintridge) and hiking 5.5 miles on the Gabrielino Trail. The trail descends through mixed chaparral and riparian corridors, losing roughly 1,500 feet of elevation on the way in. The camp is also accessible via longer routes from JPL/Arroyo Seco to the south. This is a true primitive backcountry camp with no toilets, no potable water, and no trash collection. Campers must pack out all waste and bring adequate water supplies. A California Campfire Permit is required for any stove or campfire use, and an Adventure Pass or Interagency Pass is required for vehicles parked at Red Box trailhead.
Directions
From Interstate 210 in La Cañada Flintridge, take Angeles Crest Highway (Highway 2) approximately 14 miles to Red Box Saddle. Park at the Red Box parking area (Adventure Pass required) and follow the Gabrielino Trail 5.5 miles downhill to the campground.
