About

Devore Trail Camp is a primitive backcountry trail camp nestled in the Angeles National Forest along the scenic Gabrielino National Recreation Trail. Accessible only by hiking 5.5 miles from Red Box Saddle on Angeles Crest Highway, this remote campground offers six surprisingly spacious, tree-covered campsites perfect for hikers seeking solitude in the San Gabriel Mountains. Each campsite is equipped with a picnic table and fire ring, providing the basic amenities for a backcountry camping experience. The camp is located near a small stream and is managed by the Forest Service as a free, first-come, first-served facility. There are no restrooms, water sources, or other modern facilities at the campground, so visitors must be completely self-sufficient and practice Leave No Trace principles. The trail camp serves as an ideal base for exploring the surrounding San Gabriel Mountains, including nearby Mount Wilson. Hikers, backpackers, and equestrians use the Gabrielino Trail regularly, making Devore a popular overnight stop for multi-day treks. The campground honors the early presence of those who worked and helped visitors in this area of the forest.

Directions

From Interstate 210 in La Cañada, take Angeles Crest Highway (Highway 2) approximately 14 miles to Red Box Saddle. Park there and follow the Gabrielino Trail 5.5 miles to the campground. This is a hike-in only campground.
