About

Hoegees Trail Camp is a backcountry hike-in campground situated at approximately 2,500 feet elevation in the San Gabriel Mountains, accessible via a 2.2-mile moderately easy hike along the Winter Creek Trail from Chantry Flat Picnic Area. The shaded route winds through lush vegetation including pines, oaks, and riparian growth, making for a pleasant approach to this primitive camping area. The campground offers 13 hike-in campsites, each equipped with a picnic table and either a campfire ring or Klamath stove. This is a true backcountry experience with no modern amenities: there are no toilets, no trash receptacles, and no piped water. Seasonal stream water is available from Winter Creek but must be treated or filtered before use; however, flow may be low or non-existent during dry periods, so bringing adequate water for drinking, cooking, cleaning, and extinguishing campfires is essential. This is a pack-in, pack-out site. From Hoegees, hikers can continue onto the Upper Winter Creek Trail for a 4.85-mile loop with 1,000 feet of elevation gain, or connect to the Gabrielino National Recreation Trail to journey toward Mt. Wilson. The area sees heavy use, particularly on weekends when parking at Chantry Flat fills early. An Adventure Pass or Interagency Pass is required for parking at the trailhead.

Directions

From Interstate 210 in Arcadia, exit at Santa Anita Ave. and go north 6 miles to the Chantry Flat Picnic Area. Hike in approximately 2.2 miles via the Winter Creek Trail.
