About
Hoegees Trail Camp is a primitive backcountry campground nestled in the San Gabriel Mountains within the Angeles National Forest. Reaching the camp requires a 2.2-mile hike from the Chantry Flat Picnic Area along the Upper Winter Creek Trail, a shaded route passing through lush pines, oaks, and riparian vegetation. The trail provides a moderate introduction to the area's extensive trail network. The campground offers 13 hike-in sites, each equipped with a picnic table and campfire ring or Klamath stove. There are no toilet facilities, no trash receptacles (pack in, pack out), and no potable water. A seasonal stream may provide water for filtering/treatment, though flow can be minimal or absent during dry periods. Campers should bring all water needed for drinking, cooking, and fire extinguishing. From Hoegees, hikers can extend their trip on the Upper Winter Creek Trail for a 4.85-mile loop gaining 1,000 feet of elevation, or connect to the Gabrielino National Recreation Trail toward Mt. Wilson. A California Campfire Permit is required, and campfires may be prohibited during high fire danger. The area experiences heavy use, especially on weekends.
Directions
From Interstate 210 in Arcadia, exit at Santa Anita Ave and go north 6 miles to the Chantry Flat Picnic Area. Hike in approximately 2 miles via the Upper Winter Creek Trail.
