West Ashtabula Crossing Campground is situated on 23 wooded acres overlooking Lake Ashtabula in the scenic Sheyenne River Valley of eastern North Dakota. Created by the Baldhill Dam in 1944, Lake Ashtabula sits in one of the most picturesque river valleys in the region. The name Ashtabula comes from a Native American word meaning "Fish River," which aptly describes the lake's abundant fish population including walleye, northern pike, white bass, yellow perch, and black bullhead. The campground offers 38 sites with a mix of electric and tent-only options. Twenty-six sites feature 30/50-amp electric hookups, while the remaining sites accommodate tent camping. On-site amenities include a boat launch, RV dump station, accessible fishing pier, automated fish cleaning station, and a picnic shelter. A swimming beach, playground, and restaurant are located less than one mile away. The surrounding area provides nearly 3,000 acres of wildlife habitat managed by the Army Corps of Engineers, open for wildlife viewing, birding, hiking, and hunting. Spring and fall bring migratory waterfowl including white pelicans, while the region supports white-tailed deer, sharptail grouse, wild turkey, and gray partridge. The 63-mile Sheyenne River Valley National Scenic Byway runs nearby, and the North Country National Scenic Trail is accessible from the campground.

From Interstate 94, take Valley City exit 292. Follow signs through Valley City to County Road 21, then travel north for 15 miles.
