Mel Rieman Recreation Area is a 70-acre Corps of Engineers campground situated on the shoreline of Lake Ashtabula in the scenic Sheyenne River valley of eastern North Dakota. The campground features 27 campsites, with 15 offering 30-amp electric hookups. Facilities include flush toilets, hot showers, drinking water, and a dump station. The campground is renowned for its spectacular sunset views across the reservoir. Lake Ashtabula was created in 1944 by the construction of Baldhill Dam on the Sheyenne River. The name "Ashtabula" is a Native American word meaning "Fish River," reflecting the lake's excellent fishing opportunities. Anglers target walleye, northern pike, white bass, yellow perch, and black bullhead at seven boat ramps, two accessible fishing piers, and four automated fish cleaning stations. The adjacent day-use area offers swimming, picnicking, playgrounds, and a visitor center. The campground is located in the prairie potholes region, providing habitat for abundant migratory waterfowl including white pelicans in summer, plus white-tailed deer, sharptail grouse, wild turkey, and gray partridge. Nearly 3,000 acres of surrounding land managed by the Corps of Engineers offers wildlife viewing, birding, hiking, and hunting opportunities. The 63-mile Sheyenne River Valley National Scenic Byway and 35 miles of the North Country National Scenic Trail are within a short drive.

Directions

From Interstate 94, take Valley City exit 292. Follow signs through Valley City and turn left onto County Road 19. Travel 10 miles to the campground.
