Beach Hazards Statement issued July 20 at 10:38AM PDT until July 21 at 5:00PM PDT by NWS Los Angeles/Oxnard CA
* WHAT...Dangerous rip currents and breaking waves due to elevated surf expected. * WHERE...San Luis Obispo County Beaches and Santa Barbara County Central Coast Beaches. * WHEN...Through Tuesday afternoon, peaking Monday afternoon through Tuesday morning. * IMPACTS...There is an increased risk of ocean drowning. Rip currents can pull swimmers and surfers out to sea. Waves can wash people off beaches and rocks, and capsize small boats nearshore. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Highest surf will be focused across south facing beaches due to a southerly swell produced by Tropical Storm Elida. Additional Beach Hazards Statements or High Surf Advisories will likely be needed through the rest of the week due to a series of incoming southerly swells.
About
Washburn Campground occupies a scenic plateau high above the central California coast at Hearst San Simeon State Park, approximately one mile inland from the beach. The campground offers 68 primitive campsites, each equipped with a fire ring and picnic table, with water spigots located nearby throughout the campground. Chemical toilets serve the camping area, and campers have access to token-operated showers and an RV sanitation station at the adjacent San Simeon Creek Campground. The setting provides panoramic views of both the Pacific Ocean and the Santa Lucia Mountains, with the San Simeon Natural Preserve nearby featuring wetlands, riparian areas, and unique mima mound topography. A 3.3-mile trail runs through portions of the preserve and campground, offering scenic overlooks and interpretive panels about local wildlife and habitat. Access to Washburn Campground is through the San Simeon Creek Campground entrance station. The campground accommodates RVs and motorhomes up to 35 feet in length. Dogs are permitted but must remain leashed at all times and are prohibited on beaches and adjacent trails. Three ADA-accessible sites feature firm surfaces and accessible fire rings.
Directions
From Highway 1 just north of Cambria, take the San Simeon Creek Road entrance. Check in at the San Simeon Creek Campground entrance station, then continue to Washburn Campground located on the plateau above.
