About

Montana De Oro Environmental Camping provides a primitive backcountry experience within one of California's largest state parks. The four environmental campsites require a short hike of approximately 100 yards to half a mile from parking areas, offering solitude and stunning coastal scenery. Located within the 8,000-acre park that features rugged cliffs, secluded beaches, and seven miles of shoreline, these walk-in sites provide an intimate connection with nature. The environmental camps are designed for tent camping only and include basic amenities: a picnic table at each site and shared pit toilets. Visitors must bring their own water as no potable water is available at these sites. Campfires are not permitted at the environmental camps, so campers should plan accordingly with camp stoves for cooking. The park's moderate coastal weather means summer days can be 30 degrees cooler than inland areas, so layered clothing is recommended. The environmental sites provide easy access to the park's extensive trail system, including routes to 1,347-foot Valencia Peak, and are close to Spooner's Cove Beach. The park is renowned for its spring wildflower displays, diverse wildlife including black-tailed deer and black oystercatchers, and excellent tidepools. The nearby town of Los Osos (4 miles north) offers supplies and services.

Directions

From Highway 101 in San Luis Obispo, take Los Osos Valley Road west for about 11 miles until it becomes Pecho Valley Road. Continue 3.5 miles to the Spooner Ranch House and turn left into the campground area. Environmental campsites require a hike of 100 yards to half a mile from parking.
