The Horse Camps at Montaña de Oro State Park offer a unique equestrian camping experience along California's Central Coast. These primitive campsites are specifically designed for horse camping, featuring corrals, horse stalls, and watering troughs to accommodate riders and their horses. Each site includes a fire ring and picnic table, with water spigots and chemical toilets located nearby. The campground provides access to extensive equestrian trails that wind through the park's diverse landscape, from coastal plains and secluded beaches to inland canyons and hills rising to 1,347-foot Valencia Peak. With over 8,000 acres to explore and seven miles of shoreline, riders can experience both mountain and coastal environments. The park's moderate climate keeps summer temperatures along the coast about 30 degrees cooler than inland areas. This is a primitive facility with no electrical hookups, RV sanitation stations, or showers. Firewood is available for purchase from the campground host at the nearby Islay Creek Campground. The small town of Los Osos, located 4 miles north, offers gas stations, grocery stores, and dining options for provisioning before your stay.

Directions

From San Luis Obispo, take Los Osos Valley Road west for about 11 miles until it becomes Pecho Valley Road. Continue 3.5 miles to Spooner Ranch House and turn left. The horse camp entrance is on the left almost immediately after entering the park. From Morro Bay, take South Bay Boulevard south about 6 miles, turn right on Los Osos Valley Road, continue 1.5 miles until it becomes Pecho Valley Road, then follow as above.
