About

Washburn Island is one of the last undeveloped coastal properties on Cape Cod, offering a rare opportunity for true backcountry-style camping within an estuarine research reserve. The 330-acre island features diverse habitats including barrier beaches, salt marshes, coastal dunes, and upland oak-pine forests. Nine family sites (accommodating up to 4 campers and 2 tents) and one group site (up to 25 campers and 10 tents) are tucked among the forest, with Sites 3, 7, 8, and 10 offering the most seclusion. This is strictly primitive camping. There is no potable water, electricity, or trash service on the island. Two composting toilets are available near the campsites but only operational from Memorial Day through Columbus Day. Campers must bring at least one gallon of water per person per day and pack out all refuse. Fire rings are provided at sites, but firewood must be pre-purchased ($7/bundle) as Massachusetts law prohibits transporting firewood into DCR campgrounds. Access requires a private boat, kayak, or canoe launched from a public ramp. There is no on-site parking at the reserve or White's Landing, so campers must arrange their own parking. The reward for this logistical effort is a pristine island setting with excellent swimming, beachcombing, and wildlife viewing opportunities in a protected estuarine environment.

Directions

Accessible only by private boat. Visitors must launch from nearby boat ramps in Waquoit Bay and either beach their boats on Washburn Island or anchor and wade ashore. The island is located in Waquoit Bay off the south shore of Cape Cod in Falmouth. Overnight parking during June 20 through August 31 is available at East Falmouth Elementary School, 33 Davisville Road, East Falmouth. Outside these dates, campers must arrange their own parking on non-DCR property.
