About
Freetown-Fall River State Forest spans over 5,000 acres across Freetown, Fall River, and Lakeville in southeastern Massachusetts. Acquired over a 20-year period beginning in the 1930s, this vast tract of public land is part of the Southeastern Massachusetts Bioreserve and provides diverse recreational opportunities. The main entrance area features day-use facilities including a seasonal wading pool (open 10am-6pm during summer), picnic pavilions available for group rental, playing fields, and restrooms. The forest contains more than 50 miles of unpaved roads and trails suitable for hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking, and cross-country skiing. Off-road motorcycle riding is permitted seasonally from the Monday after the first weekend in May through the last Sunday in November. The forest includes Profile Rock, offering views of the state's southern coast, and Rattlesnake Brook, which is stocked with brook trout in spring. The property lies mostly in the center of Freetown, dividing Assonet, East Freetown, and Fall River's northern boundary. A 227-acre Wampanoag reservation is located within the forest boundaries. Hunting and fishing are permitted in season with proper licensing. The forest is open year-round from sunrise to sunset, with free admission to the grounds.
