About
Walton Lake Campground stands as the premier recreation destination in the Ochoco National Forest, offering a peaceful retreat among towering old-growth ponderosa pine trees and pristine mountain meadows. The spring-fed lake, impounded by a small dam, sparkles like a blue jewel within the dense forest and provides the centerpiece for a variety of recreational activities. The campground features individual and group sites, many with sweeping lake views. Visitors enjoy swimming at the designated beach, fishing from shore or the accessible fishing pier for stocked rainbow trout, and paddling in non-motorized watercraft. The lake's boat ramp accommodates kayaks, canoes, and other small craft. Surrounding habitat includes quaking aspen and tall willows that attract diverse wildlife including white-headed woodpeckers, belted kingfishers, spotted sandpipers, and various waterfowl. Hiking and mountain biking trails provide additional recreation opportunities. The 1-mile Walton Lake Trail offers scenic views as it encircles the lake, while the nearby 7.5-mile Round Mountain Trail provides more extensive backcountry exploration. The area is known for spring wildflowers in the Big Summit Prairie area, and wildlife viewing opportunities for elk, deer, and occasional antelope. Prineville lies 31 miles away for additional services and amenities.
