About

Located on the northern edge of Mill Creek Wilderness in Ochoco National Forest, Whistler Campground offers primitive camping within walking distance of the Wildcat North Trailhead. This free campground has approximately 4 sites and attracts both wilderness hikers and rockhounding enthusiasts, as the Whistler Springs rockhounding site is located within the campground area. The campground has a vault toilet but no potable water, so campers must bring their own supply. There are many standing dead trees in the area, so caution is advised when wandering and setting up camp. The campground operates first-come, first-served with a 14-day stay limit. Access is via Forest Service Road 27 and 200, with unpaved sections that are very rough. Both the road to the campground and the campground road itself are challenging, making this location unsuitable for recreational vehicles and trailers. 4WD or AWD vehicles are strongly recommended for safe access.

Directions

From Prineville, travel north on Main Street for approximately 11 miles to the Ochoco National Forest boundary. Main Street becomes Forest Service Road 27 at the boundary. Continue on FSR 27 for another 12 miles. At the junction of FSR 27 and FSR 2745, veer right to stay on FSR 27. Continue for another 4 miles, then turn right at the junction with FSR 200 toward Wildcat North Trailhead. Continue past the trailhead into Whistler Campground. 4WD or AWD vehicles strongly recommended due to very rough unpaved roads.
