About
Walk In The Water Primitive Hike-in Campsites are located within the Lake Wales Ridge State Forest in Polk County, approximately 44 miles southeast of Lakeland. The area features two designated primitive campsites, Black Bear and Wood Duck, both positioned along the Big Bay Trail and accessible only by foot from the trailhead parking area on County Road 630 East. Each campsite accommodates up to 8 people and includes a picnic table and fire ring. This is true primitive camping with no potable water, electricity, or restroom facilities available. Campers must bring their own drinking water and pack out all trash following Leave No Trace principles. During wet periods, campsites may become flooded. The forest supports diverse recreational activities including hiking, bicycling, horseback riding, fishing, wildlife viewing, and seasonal hunting. Bears and raccoons inhabit the area, so proper food storage is essential. Pets are welcome but must remain on a leash no longer than 10 feet.
Directions
From Frostproof, travel east on County Road 630. The Big Bay Trailhead parking area is located at 851 County Road 630 East, Frostproof, FL 33843. Campsites are hike-in only from this trailhead.
