About
Highlands Hammock State Park Campground is situated within a historic central Florida state park that protects one of the region's most significant old-growth hammock ecosystems. The campground features 138 sites with water and electric hookups, accommodating RVs up to 50 feet as well as tent campers. Sites vary from open and sunny to fully shaded, each equipped with picnic tables and fire rings. The facility includes four restroom buildings with hot showers, laundry facilities, a dump station, and a recreation hall available for rental. The park contains more rare and endemic species than any other Florida state park, with 15 distinct natural communities across 9,000 acres. Campers have direct access to eight nature trails ranging from 975 to 3,000 feet, including elevated boardwalks through cypress swamps and hardwood hammocks beneath towering live oaks. A 3-mile paved loop and 6-mile off-road bike trail provide additional recreation. The on-site Civilian Conservation Corps Museum showcases the park's Depression-era history, and guided tram tours operate seasonally through restricted wildlife areas. The campground serves as an excellent base for birders, as the park is part of the Great Florida Birding Trail with frequent sightings of red-shouldered hawks, pileated woodpeckers, wading birds, and seasonal warblers.
