About
Claytor Lake State Park features seven reservable picnic shelters spread across its 472-acre grounds on a 4,500-acre lake. The shelters accommodate groups ranging from 30 to 100 people and offer varying amenities including electrical outlets, water spigots, fireplace or pedestal grills, and picnic tables. Shelters 1 and 4 are universally accessible, and two small shelters (6 and 7) are available only during the summer season at the beach bathhouse. The picnic areas include drinking water, restroom facilities, and several shelters with horseshoe pits. Most shelters offer lake views, with Shelter #2 providing the best lakefront vista just 65 feet from the water. The park's day-use facilities complement the picnic areas with an accessible fishing pier, marina, swimming beach, hiking trails, and boat launch. The setting provides a mature oak-hickory-poplar forest environment with abundant wildlife viewing opportunities. Picnic shelters can be reserved for all-day use from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., though parking and swimming fees are charged separately.
