About
Walnut Flats Campground is a small, primitive camping area in the Jefferson National Forest, located in the mountains of Giles County, Virginia at approximately 2,500 feet elevation. The campground features six basic campsites arranged around a grassy opening surrounded by forest, offering a peaceful setting for tent camping and small recreation vehicles. Each site includes a grill and lantern post. The campground provides vault toilets and well water (though potable water availability varies by season). A wildlife pond is a short walk from the campground. The location serves as an excellent base for exploring the surrounding forest, with nearby access to the Flat Top Mountain Trail System, the Appalachian Trail, Dismal Creek (a regularly stocked trout stream), and the scenic Falls of Dismal. The area offers opportunities for hiking, horseback riding, fishing, and enjoying the quiet mountain environment. This is a no-fee campground operated by the USFS Eastern Divide Ranger District. Pets are allowed but must be kept on a leash no longer than 6 feet. Quiet hours are enforced from 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.
