About
Claytor Lake State Park Hunts campground is part of a 472-acre state park on the shores of the 21-mile-long Claytor Lake in Pulaski County, Virginia. The park features multiple campground areas including Dogwood, Birch, Cedar, and Alder, accommodating everything from large RVs to tents. Dogwood and Birch campgrounds offer electric and water hookups, while Cedar and Alder are primitive tent camping areas. Each campsite includes a picnic table, lantern hanger, and fire ring with metal grill. The park is ideal for water-based recreation with a full-service marina offering boat slips, fuel, supplies, and boat rentals including pontoons, kayaks, and canoes. Sport fishing is particularly popular, with bass, catfish, muskie, walleye, and striped bass found in the lake. The park has installed fish attractors to improve angling opportunities. A universally accessible fishing pier is available in the picnic area. Land-based activities include seven miles of easy-rated hiking and biking trails through mature oak-hickory-poplar forest where white-tailed deer, raccoons, squirrels, and various bird species are common. The historic Howe House visitor center features interactive exhibits on lake ecology. Between Memorial Day and Labor Day, the park offers guarded beach swimming, a snack bar, gift shop, and ranger-led interpretive programs covering wildlife, natural sciences, and history.
