About

Claytor Lake State Park Campgrounds encompasses four distinct camping areas on the shores of Virginia's 4,500-acre Claytor Lake, a 21-mile-long impoundment of the New River created in 1939. The campground system totals 103 sites plus one group site, operating from early March through early December. Dogwood Campground accommodates large RVs up to 40 feet with water and electric hookups (20 and 30 amp service), featuring mostly pull-through sites in a sparsely wooded, flat terrain. Birch Campground handles smaller RVs up to 30 feet with water and electric hookups (20, 30, and 50 amp service) in a mostly wooded setting with primarily back-in sites. Alder and Cedar campgrounds cater to tent campers and small trailers up to 20 feet with no hookups, situated in wooded terrain varying from level to hilly. Dump stations are available in Dogwood and Cedar campgrounds. All campsites include picnic tables, lantern hangers, and fire rings with metal grills. Bathhouses provide flush toilets and hot showers, with universally accessible facilities in Dogwood and seasonally in Alder. The park operates a full-service marina with boat rentals, fuel, supplies, and a gift shop. Seven miles of hiking trails wind through mature oak-hickory-poplar forest, and a guarded swimming beach operates Memorial Day through Labor Day. The historic Howe House visitor center features interactive exhibits on lake ecology.
