About

Rocky Knob Campground is one of the first established campgrounds along the Blue Ridge Parkway, nestled at milepost 167.1 in rural Virginia at an elevation of approximately 2,800 feet. The campground offers 106 sites spread across four loops, accommodating both tents and RVs of various sizes, though there are no hookups available. Located within the 4,000-acre Rocky Knob Recreation Area, the campground sits amid rolling meadowlands with seasonal wildflower displays and expansive mountain views. The campground serves as an ideal basecamp for exploring the area's extensive trail system. The Rock Castle Gorge Trail, a 10.8-mile loop trail, descends into a 1,500-foot ravine carved by Rock Castle Creek, featuring stunning crystalline quartz formations and remnants of historic mountain homesteads. The moderate 3-mile Black Ridge Trail loops through forest and meadow from the Rocky Knob Visitor Center. The area's geological features and Appalachian history make it a distinctive destination along the Parkway. Some sites can be reserved in advance via Recreation.gov, while others operate on a first-come, first-served basis. The campground includes seasonal amenities such as flush toilets, potable water, and a dump station, along with a 150-person campfire circle. Nearby attractions include the historic Mabry Mill at milepost 176, the town of Floyd eight miles away, and multiple area wineries. Note that the campground has no accessible facilities.
