About

Van Riper State Park Campground sits within a 1,100-acre park featuring 1.5 miles of waterfront on Lake Michigamme and the Peshekee River in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The modern campground contains 143 sites arranged in two loops, offering mostly shaded spots suitable for families. Sites vary in size, with perimeter locations providing more privacy backed by woods. The campground includes modern amenities such as flush toilets, showers, electrical hookups (including some 50-amp service), pull-through sites, and a sanitation station. The park offers extensive recreational opportunities including a buoyed swim beach with sandy shoreline, an accessible boat launch, bicycle pump tracks, and an accessible playground. Five miles of hiking trails wind through hills showing evidence of early mining ventures. The Peshekee River provides excellent fishing and paddling opportunities. Additional facilities include picnic areas, a reservable picnic shelter with electricity, and a beach house with restrooms and changing rooms. The park also features a separate 39-site rustic campground, mini cabins, and a rustic cabin available year-round. Located off U.S. 41, the park is well-positioned for exploring the Upper Peninsula, with the historic town of Champion nearby.
