About
Lauterman Lake Campground offers a secluded backcountry camping experience in northern Wisconsin's Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest. Located off Highway 70 west of Florence, the campground features five walk-in or canoe-in campsites positioned along the peaceful shores of Lauterman Lake. Each site includes a tent pad, picnic table, and fire ring, with wilderness-style vault toilets available nearby. There is no potable water, so campers must bring their own supply.
The surrounding Lauterman National Recreation Area is centered on a popular trail system with three loops offering opportunities for hiking, mountain biking, and groomed cross-country skiing in winter. Lauterman Lake itself provides excellent paddling and year-round fishing for northern pike, bass, perch, and bluegill. An Adirondack-style shelter near the trailhead offers a rest stop for day users.
The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no advance reservations. Camping fees are $5 per night, or $2.50 with an Interagency pass. This is a primitive, walk-in setting best suited for tent campers, backpackers, and paddlers seeking a quiet wilderness experience.
Directions
From Florence, take Highway 70 west 12 miles to Forest Road 2154. Turn left and go 1/4 mile south to the recreation area.
