About
Sturgeon River Campground is a rustic 9-site campground situated along the Sturgeon River in Ottawa National Forest's Kenton Ranger District, adjacent to the Sturgeon River Gorge Wilderness. Each campsite is equipped with a picnic table, fire ring, and lantern post, providing a primitive camping experience in a scenic natural setting. The campground serves as an excellent base for outdoor recreation. The Sturgeon River offers fishing opportunities for brown trout and steelhead, with access for bank, wade, or float fishing. During spring runoff from mid-April through early June, the river provides challenging whitewater conditions ranging from Class I to Class IV rapids, suitable only for advanced paddlers. The Sidnaw Creek Trail and North Country National Scenic Trail offer hiking and backpacking opportunities through rugged terrain with views of the gorge, waterfalls, and wilderness landscapes. This is a first-come, first-served campground with no reservations. Campers should note that no potable water is available on-site, and the campground is maintained from May through October but remains accessible year-round until snow conditions limit access. Motorized vehicles are prohibited within the adjacent Wilderness boundaries.
Directions
From Sidnaw travel east on M-28 for 1/4 mile, turn left onto Forest Road 2200 and travel 5 miles. The campground will be on the left.
