Sturgeon River Campground

Special Weather Statement issued May 22 at 3:49AM EDT by NWS Marquette MI
Gusty southeast winds as high as 20 to locally 25 mph, combined with dry conditions will lead to elevated wildfire potential this afternoon across most of Upper Michigan away from the shorelines of the Great Lakes. Avoid outdoor burning today. Immediately report any wildfires to local emergency services by calling 911. Burn restrictions remain in effect. For complete details, visit www.dnr.state.mi.us/burnpermits, or by calling 866-922-2876.
About
Sturgeon River Campground sits along the banks of the Sturgeon River in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, serving as a gateway to the adjacent Sturgeon River Gorge Wilderness. The campground offers 9 sites, each equipped with a fire ring, picnic table, and lantern post. A double vault toilet provides restroom facilities, but campers must bring their own drinking water as no potable water is available. The location is ideal for anglers pursuing brown trout and steelhead via bank, wade, or float fishing. During spring runoff, typically May through early June, the river offers 27 miles of canoeable water accessible from the campground. Outside this window, natural hazards including heavy rocks, treacherous falls, and rock outcroppings make paddling inadvisable. Hikers can access the 7.5-mile Sidnaw Creek Trail or connect to the North Country National Scenic Trail, which traverses 116 miles across the forest. No motorized vehicles are permitted within the Wilderness boundaries. The campground operates on a first-come-first-served basis with no reservations accepted. Full services run from late May through mid-October, with the site remaining physically accessible year-round until snow conditions limit access.
Directions
From Sidnaw, travel east on M-28 approximately 1/4 mile to FR 2200. Turn left onto FR 2200 and travel north approximately 5 miles; the campground will be on your left.
