About
Ute Campground is situated at the base of Haystack Mountain facing Chimney Rock National Monument, sharing land with the Southern Ute Nation along the reservation border. The terrain features a hilly forest environment of ponderosa pines, Gambel oak, Rocky Mountain juniper, fragrant sumac, and meadows. While the pines provide shade, the south-facing slope gets very warm in summer. The campground offers 26 individual campsites plus one group site accommodating up to 32 people. Services include potable water from a pressurized station, two vault toilet facilities, picnic tables at each site, fire grates, and trash pickup. Parking spurs are approximately 20 feet in length, though the maximum RV length is listed as 35 feet. No hookups, dump station, or showers are available. The entrance to Chimney Rock National Monument is only 4 miles away on Colorado 151. The campground is centrally located between Turkey Springs Trail System and the Devil Mountain, Mule Mountain, and Horse Mountain trail systems featuring ATV, motorcycle, mountain bike, hiking, and horseback riding trails. Stream fishing and natural hot springs on the Piedra River are nearby, and the Southern Ute Reservation offers fishing access to Lake Capote and the Piedra River with fee permits.
Directions
