About
Upper Russian Lake Cabin is a rustic trapper-style log cabin originally built in the 1950s and recently refurbished to preserve its historic character. Located on the north shore of Upper Russian Lake in the Chugach National Forest, the cabin sits in an open grove of giant cottonwood trees with views of the lake and surrounding mountains. The 12x14-foot structure accommodates up to 8 people with bunk space for 6. The cabin is equipped with a wood stove for heating, a splitting maul and hand saw for cutting firewood, a table with benches, and an outhouse. A rowboat with oars is provided for exploring the lake. There is no running water, electricity, or cell service. Visitors must bring all drinking water or treat lake water, plus bedding, sleeping pads, flashlights, cooking gear, and food. All garbage and food must be packed out. Recreation opportunities include fishing for Dolly Varden and rainbow trout, hiking, mountain biking, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and wildlife viewing. The area supports moose, black bears, brown bears, and wolves. Access is via the Russian Lakes Trail: 9 miles from the trailhead on Snug Harbor Road or 12 miles from Russian River Campground. Floatplane access is also possible. Motorized trail access is prohibited year-round, and horse/pack stock access is closed April 1 through June 30.
